Beware of missed call scams
Occasionally, your phone may ring once and then stop. If this happens and you don’t recognize the number, do not call it back. You may be targeted by a “missed call” scam.
With illegal robocallers, the intention is not always to make you answer the call. Sometimes, their goal is to make you call back.
Missed call scams often use landline numbers in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, or international numbers. In more sophisticated cases, they may use numbers from India, the United States, or other countries, or they might use numbers that closely resemble legitimate ones to create credibility.
If it’s not a missed call, scammers may appear as fake voicemail messages, urging you to call a number with an unfamiliar area code to “claim a reward” or inform you about a sick relative, or they may request you to transfer money to retain a prize.
If you call back any such number, you are likely to incur connection charges, at the very least according to your network’s tariff, or even higher charges for premium service hotlines. These charges may appear on your bill as additional services.
These scam techniques, although old, still manage to deceive many people. Therefore, you should remain vigilant with calls from unknown numbers or calls claiming you have won a prize, and never call back or transfer money to unfamiliar numbers.

How to avoid scam phone numbers
Do not answer or call back any calls from numbers you don’t recognize, especially landline numbers.
Before calling unfamiliar numbers, check if the area code indicates an international call.
If you do not make international calls, ask your phone company or network provider to block outgoing international calls.
Always remain cautious, even if a phone number appears to be genuine.

5 months agoIndian call centres using VPN’s and a phone number site to mask the identity. If they call you, do not answer, and report number straight away. We might not be able to eradicate all scammers, but the more numbers that are blocked not just nationally, but internationally, the harder it gets for them.
